Hi Katrina,

In reply to your message about seperating your dreams from your husbands. I have recently done just that. My husband is a tiler and loves his job. I work part time as an Administration Assistant while our children are at school. But lately I have been looking for "who I am" In doing that I looked at my talents, which are organizing, delegating and caring. I decided to become a Home Management Consultant, which means I will do consultations with people in their homes on how to organize paperwork, chores, time, clutter etc. I didn't even know if this profession existed, so I started to research and study and found that overseas it does, they are called Professional Organizers. I read, studied, implemented more organization skills into my home, did a course called planning and prioritizing (on this site) am doing an organizing workshop and Interior Design course soon, have been into internett sites, and next year will be doing a Certificate in Adult Teaching (NZQA). I'm really excited, I have my portfolio and brochures etc ready to go. All this because I looked at myself and where I wanted to be. Go for it. Who are you. All the big family things you'll work out together, but you are you, and your husband has his dreams to. Hope that helps.

Katrina, great question. I believe that a clear sense of goals, for yourself, is the first and most critical factor in effective timelogic, or time choices.

The quickest guidance I can offer on the topic is to pick up a copy of my first book 'Getting a grip on time'. The first part of the book has some very simple exercises on personal goal-setting, which would take too much space to give here. (You can pick up it at most bookshops in NZ or Australia, or through our secure site)

If each partner in a relationship (and this could include children, or even work partners as well) does the exercises for themselves, then it gives a wonderful starting point for discussions together, sharing each others' dreams and goals. From this solid foundation, magic happens!

Once you've done that, you might like to drop another note to this discussion board, telling us how you got on.

I find it hard to separate myself out from my husband in terms of dreams for the future. What's more, I wonder if I should? I mean the really big stuff involving where we live and how we live, is really family stuff, isn't it?
